coronavirus in the tech world

How the Coronavirus is Affecting the Tech World

Vernon Technology is here to help you remote work during COVID-19

Since the discovery of the Coronavirus in Wuhan, China in December there have been over 2,700 deaths and more than 80,000 people have been infected worldwide. This illness has affected the globe in a traumatic way and even industries have begun feeling the effects.

Popular tech companies, like Apple, who have factories in China and surrounding Asian countries are now expecting severe delays on highly anticipated products, like the new 5G iPhone. The coronavirus has resulted in many tech companies closing their stores and offices in China and the surrounding areas. With these closures, and the quarantine of the 11 million people living in Wuhan, accounting for 25% of global production of fibre optics, it is likely that there will be a noticeable decrease in the amount of tech products available on the markets. Smartphone production alone is projected to drop 12%.

Tech trade shows have also taken a significant hit since the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Prior to the Mobile World Congress 2020 (MWC), the world’s largest mobile trade show, several companies, such as LG and AT&T, backed out of making an appearance last minute due to the increase of coronavirus outbreaks. As many tech companies use trade shows to introduce new smartphones, there will be a significant delay in the release of many sought after products as more businesses back out of various global trade shows.

Some companies have used their trade shows as a platform to help combat the coronavirus. Samsung’s Unpacked 2020 event in San Francisco took several precautions ensuring the safety of their guests. In addition to offering face masks and hand sanitizers, they used thermal imaging cameras at the entrance to detect fevers of attendees, and provided onsite medical assistance.
